Movement in space and circulating coffee cups. Gossip. Scratching markers, humming heater. Throw downs and contemporary cocktails. Art hanging, smashing, talking. Floor sweeping, faculty peeking. Guards laughing, students singing. Party, beer, swearing, embarrassment. Sewing machine rattling, fabric torn, mask fitting. Twenty four hours a day especially for you.

This project came together because of an onsite collaboration between artists Saskia Janssen, Jonas Ohlsson and Sarah Slifer, and curator Femke Lutgerink. To work in a gallery as part of an art school requires a different attitude than other exhibition sites. It is a mix of art education, art making and showing. We decided to turn the gallery into an art studio and a 24/7 radio station. During the exhibition period it broadcasts every single minute of activity into Beverly.

The exchange between the artists and curator took place on many levels - talking, discussing, building, listening, dancing, reading, writing, presenting and singing - and this resulted in this installation. Almost everything came into existence, or was appropriated, in a working period of ten days. We worked with the material that was already in school, or that was brought in by students, faculty and other people. The common thread in the exhibition is that all of the works are about inspiration and group dynamics. It also is about the role an artist, an educator or an exhibition maker can play in society, professionally and personally.

Since Sarah Slifer is the only artist of the group living here, in Salem, a neighboring town of Beverly, she felt very much like the connector to the Beverly community. The first time we - two Dutchies and a Swede - came to Beverly, Sarah invited us to come to the karaoke night at the Irish Pub, Kitty O’Sheas. This was a perfect introduction to Beverly.

With workshops taking place during the development of the show, we tried to give the students some insight into our way of working. Our goal was to show them that art making can have a decision process of a couple of minutes, or two weeks, or longer. That it can be a direct reaction to the encounters you have and that you can come a long way with good ideas and drawings made by others. Art can cause a complete addiction, as Jonas Ohlsson always states. On the other hand, we were also doing our own work, and we did not give up total control of the space. However, we do want to embrace the energy the students bring in so the students can work in the room and come in for inspiration. They will program activities and create their own shows in a designated area. Also, other people from the Beverly community are welcome to use the space. For example, the organizers of the Trash Finders Ball taking place in Beverly on February 21st showed interest in having their trash costume making meeting and trash-inspired poetry reading in the space. Also, the student group Food Not Bombs has served and will continue to serve meals here. Unhinging the usual curatorial patterns, the selection process for this event has one requirement: All work must fit within the limitations of a five inch by five inch frame. Our point: To eliminate, at first glance, the overall individual elements of each artist on hand thus asking the viewer to look a little closer. In fact, Art Spotting persuades the viewer to take on the role as this exhibition’s practitioner, and by doing so completing the visual venture first introduced by the various works involved. With this limited requirement, the exhibition makers are investigating how to involve the viewer more actively, to increase their visual parameters, and at the same time, restricting the literal field given towards the artists.

The Distillery Gallery
November 29 - January 10, 2008.
Opening reception: November 29, from 5.30 - 8.30 pm
More info at http://www.distilleryboston.com/

Paper Picker Press (PPP)
Connected to Paper Picker Press as an advisor/trainer. Encounters examines the tension between the dominant visual culture, often confirmed by the ‘official’ media, and possible alternative visions. Encounters exhibits a variety of projects that are intended to break through the ‘stereotype’ images in order to tell another, personal story.
The exhibition can be interpreted as an open space in which visitors can become conscious of their own ‘preconceived’ images and the choices that lay at the foundation of accepting or rejecting encounters that may or may not be uncomfortable for them. The participating artists each show how fertile it can be to choose to do so. The works function as an ‘Archimedean point’, as a starting point for people to ask questions about themes such as democratisation, emancipation, and globalisation.

Reza Abedini (IR) & Hans Wolbers (NL), Azra Akšamija (AT), Luis Berríos-Negrón (PR), Nele Decock (B), Erik Franssen (NL), Pieter Geenen (BE), Mariam Ghani (US), Maximilian Goldfarb (US), G.R.A.M. (AT), Eytan Heller (IL), Rob Hornstra (NL), Stani Michiels (B), Anoek Steketee (NL), Niels Stomps (NL), The Institute for Infinitely Small Things (US), Partizan Publik en Prospektor (NL)

The exhibition is organised in co-operation with the Glaspaleis and the multidisciplinary summer festival Cultura Nova and can be seen at various locations in the Glaspaleis: in the Stadsgalerij Heerlen, the display case and level +1.

Encounters II is developed by freelance curator Femke Lutgerink at the invitation of the Stadsgalerij Heerlen. Encounters I was exhibited at the Mills Gallery in Boston (USA) at the beginning of 2007. This initial version primarily emphasised the ‘design’ of daily public life in countries with (former) totalitarian regimes. For Encounters II, she has broadened and expanded on this theme.

Opening hours
Monday: closed, Tuesday-Friday: 11-17, Thursday: 11-20, Saturday/Sunday/public holidays: 13-17. The +1 location of the Glaspaleis is open during the same hours.

During the Cultura Nova Festival (24 August to 2 September) and on Thursday evenings from 17-20, the exhibition is free admission.

De Stadsgalerij
Bongerd 18, Heerlen
http://www.stadsgalerijheerlen.nl/FEMME l Netherlands USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09880835442494354349noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33539493.post-1156871962557362252006-08-29T13:18:00.000-04:002008-12-10T07:06:12.287-05:00

GREAT APES
February 3 - March 4, 2007

Second Gallery is pleased to present Great Apes, guest curated by Dutch curator Femke Lutgerink. artists, scientists, and intellectuals. Second Gallery is closed for a month before the opening of Great Apes allowing the process for creating the show to unfold.
Great Apes explores the human fascination with gaining and wielding the ability to control and alter life on the most basic levels. This exhibition approaches the theme of the malleability of life-forms through the interaction of artistic and scientific practices, resulting in a unique exploration of phenomena such as genetics, cloning, the creation and diffusion of information, the relationship between science and politics, and the shifting of our understanding of truth over time.
As much as Great Apes explores a theme, it is also an experiment in a redefinition of the roles of the curator and the artist. Femke Lutgerink is a curator who is deeply involved in the development and creation of the show. Leonard Van Munster is the primary artist in the show, developing the theme with Femke Lutgerink, but additionally curating contributions from other artists and scientists as well as collaborating with them toward the creation of new works. The completed show confronts the visitor with the visual result of this collaborative curatorial and artistic approach.

For more information: http://www.secondgallery.org/ & http://www.donleo.org/

Articles on Great Apes
Nature, from mysterious fantasy to stark reality, by Kate McQuaid / Boston Globe, February 15
http://www.boston.com/ae/theater_arts/articles/2007/02/15/nature_from_mysterious_fantasy_to_stark_reality/
A conversation with Femke Lutgerink, by Maria LaCreta / Big, Red & Shiny, Issue #61
http://www.bigredandshiny.com/cgi-bin/retrieve.pl?issue=issue61&section=article&article=A_CONVERSATION_WITH_4141540

SECOND GALLERY
516 East 2nd Street
South Boston, MA 02127

16 September 2006 Second Gallery, opening "PEACE KING MOTHER NATURE", part 1, 2006

NEWS /
Since September 2007 Second Gallery = Proof Gallery
http://www.proof-gallery.com/

FEMME l Netherlands USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09880835442494354349noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33539493.post-1156871288936380642006-08-29T13:07:00.000-04:002008-12-10T07:06:14.244-05:00
Mills Gallery

Encounters
April 6 - May 20, 2007
Mills Gallery, Boston

Introduction
The main focus of Encounters is to show autonomous projects dealing with the tension between dominant and alternative (image) cultures in totalitarian regimes. Uzbekistan, Iran, Russia and the global domain of the internet are the featured regions. How is public life ‘designed’ in these regions? How to bring forth the tension between official and alternative visual culture? What is the dominant image Western media create of these societies and is there another story to tell? How to cope with the expanding global domain of the internet and the idea of freedom within this area? Guest-curator Femke Lutgerink brings together six artists from The Netherlands, Belgium and Iran - Nele Decock, Rob Hornstra, Stani Michiels, Anoek Steketee, Reza Abedini and Hans Wolbers - who explore these questions in their work. Photography, the internet, sound and graphic design are the media they use.

<a The self-willed, personal translations of the artists with an
obvious social acknowledgement tell us about astonishment, relatedness and also uncomfortableness within their exploration and confrontation with the others. None of the artists are explicitly political, but their points of view serve as an Archimedes point to tell about bigger global issues such as democratization, globalization and emancipation.
